Some Characters from the Patagonia

The Ovejero (Sheppard)

A tipical image from Patagonia, is the Ovejero, the Ovejero is so important in the life of the Patagonia that in Punta Arenas they made a monument in 1944. Made by German Montero.

This monument was made to make honors for this important actor of the Patagonia farm worker for the patagonian estancias (big sheep ranches), with his horse and dogs, one  of the most important tools and Friends of him partner also of many of the stories they have. They are inmortalized in this monument that is a mandatory stop for the people who visit the patagonia´s capital.

Even in this days you can see the Ovejeros working, with the Gauchos not only represent the pioneer spirit of the Patagonia, they are a relevant actor in the sheep raising business one that still´s as the most important economical activities of the Patagonia.

The Gaucho.

One of the most tipical characters in the Patagonia is the Gaucho, a mixture of argentinian and chilean traditions, this people represents one of the most beautifull and old traditions from this part of the world.

The Gaucho or ranch cowboy, is shaped by the climate of this place, the loneliness of his life even today, he knows his landsat the perfection always appears in every picture that we have of the Patagonia.

Their tipically dress with wide pants but very thin in the ancle known as bombachas a beret, and his FACON the facón is a hand made knife with a Steel blade of aproximately 12 inches that he use as a tool for his daily activities in the ranch. The mate, is an infusion made with herbs.

This drink joins the gaucho in his times of rest with Friends or alone but in the time that he enjoys the most it´s with Friends playing a card game called TRUCO. When this gauchos meet together and they start talking about the life in their lonely lifes.

Shearers  and their parties

In a previous blog we talk about the shear and now we´ll talk about another important character of the Patagonia these are the shearers.

Every estancia in the Patagonia has a especially design building for shear that is called EL GALPON DE ESQUILA.

The shear party is a group of shearers and helpers lead by a foreman from estancia to estancia doing this important productive labor in the economy of patagonia  this workers of the Patagonia with their skills they manage in a few minutes to take all the whool of a sheep with no damage at all and then send the sheep back to the fields until the nex season of shearing.

The Chilotes

We talk about the chilotes in a previous blog. But the people of Chiloe spreads all over the Patagonia bringing their traditions into the patagonian culture, the Chilotes were very important in the colonization of the Patagonia and the posetion of the magellan straight by the chilean goverment.
