Traditional Chiloe Minga

When we talk or write about Chiloe´s Island. We can´t forget to mention the most important part of it of course we´re talking about the inhabitants of this particular place known as the Chilotes.

The Chilote people is a very special mixture between the native tribes of the island such as the Huilliches and the Chonos with the Spaniards that arrive to the Island in the middle of the 16th century forming their traditions and particular culture basically because the isolation that they were in that time. (you have to think that it wasn´t easy to sail with the technology of that time so in this place they live a lot of time without knowing anything from other places).

The beliefs of the Chilote people are based basically in the very strong catholic religion brought by the Spanish settlers and the mythology of the people of Chiloe such as the Trauco, la Picoya, or the Caleuche, a phantom boat that pick the souls of the people that get lost in the sea.

Traditionally fishermen, the Chilotes still try to keep alive the traditions of the Island such as the Minga that is the community work to fulfil a task like moves a house from one farm to another place by land or sea, just for help and solidarity of the neighbors.
